I celebrate pacemakers – the heart kind and the human kind

My parents have a generator they have named “Jennie.”  If the power goes out, Jennie kicks in after 14 seconds.

Well last Monday my mom got a pacemaker put in her chest.  She has named her new heart generator “Genie” because of it’s brand name.  So far she can tell when it kicks in and I’m glad to say it has a better response time than Jennie.

So today I celebrate Pacemakers – but mostly I celebrate my mom.  She is setting a great example for aging by the way she stays engaged with her hobbies, hosts weekly gatherings of her “Otterbees” to quilt or knit or share treats, tries to stay abreast of the achievements of her 6 grandchildren between the ages of 8 and 29.  She’s the first to admit she’s not as agile as she used to be, has trouble hearing and tends to repeat her stories.  But the reality is this – she’s an upbeat 80 year old.

Her sketches always summarize her feelings the best.  Here is the one she drew after getting her pacemaker:photo
