why do I come to this place with cross and pew
when I could walk down the street
and commune with You
it isn’t the candlelight, the hymns or the songs
that create this space where I’m happy and belong
no
it’s witnessing people young and old
with hearts wide open for the world to see
that has me whispering again and again
this is how I find You looking for me.

This is lovely, “with hearts wide open for the world to see.” If only we could all live with our hearts wide open. Just imagine what we would see.

I agree with ktadelman, and I also love the serendipity of “this is how I find You looking for me.”

What a lovely explanation in a poem. I have wondered on this as a non churchgoer and I do believe you have helped me understand a little ☺️

This reminds me of a friend of mine who quit her job working “in the ministry” and took a different position “in the world” so she would have people to witness to. She felt she would be more in line with “doing God’s work” that way. So true! Love your well-chosen words that also convey this thinking.
