A phone call on the weekend from a good friend of mine had me thinking about those times in our lives when we have raw edges that seem to get caught by events in life and unravel us a bit. So – being overly familiar with the characteristics of fabric – I wrote this:
“When finishing raw edges, first trim off loose material.
Turn to inside and tuck under. This will create a protected edge.
Sew this seam with strong thread
and place a knot every so often.
In this way, the new hem
can not be ripped open completely
if it becomes caught during wear.
Such careful attention to a raw edge
will insure that it not become exposed to damage.”
